Become a Follower of Jesus Today!
We sincerely want to encourage you to ask all the questions you need to, weigh all the evidence you find and test the arguments offered in favor of following Jesus. But ultimately it will come down to your answer to the question Jesus asked His disciples in Matthew 16:15-17:
‘But who do you say that I am?’
Simon Peter replied:
‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God’
Jesus then joyfully said to Peter:
“You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being”
What is your reply to this question?
Have you come to the same answer as Peter? Is God revealing to your heart that Jesus is the Savior of your soul? The Messiah? Your next steps go beyond simply agreeing that this is true to actually responding to God and beginning a new and restored relationship with the One Who made you and loves you. Following Jesus is not based on a religious agenda, formula or ritual, it’s a matter of what you truly believe in your heart and how that belief shows up in your everyday life.
Steps to following Jesus
First, you can be sure that God loves you unconditionally and desires to have a personal relationship with you.
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Second, you need to admit your sinful nature to God, because this is what separates all of us from Him.
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard” (Romans 3:23).
Third, you should stop striving to earn God’s favor and love by your own efforts, and realize that salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ is a gift that none of us deserves.
“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8).
Finally, you need to step up and truly accept God’s gift, and believe, with all your heart, that Jesus did all He did so that you might be saved.
“But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).
So, now you know the basic steps to become a follower of Jesus. As a result, if you desire God’s gift of eternal life and fellowship with Him, take the next step and respond to God’s invitation.
Jesus says,
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6).
Jesus also says,
“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” (Revelation 3:20).
Responding to Jesus is a matter of asking God to fill your life, to forgive your sins, and asking Jesus to become your Lord and Savior. It’s not merely an intellectual undertaking, but rather, an act of sincere faith and heart-felt will.
If you want to receive Jesus now, and accept His gift of salvation, it's a matter of believing in Jesus Christ, repenting of your sins, and turning the rest of your life over to Him. If the Holy Spirit is prompting your heart to follow Jesus then pray something like the prayer below in response to the invitation Peter calls all people to:
“Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38).
“Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from You. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life and turn toward You. Please forgive me, and help me live a life that reflects your grace and holiness. I believe that Your Son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward as I follow Him. Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.”
