WHAT JESUS SAYS ABOUT BAPTISM

what Jesus says

“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Jesus’ commission to His disciples, recorded in Matthew’s Gospel, 28:18-20.

what is baptism?

Baptism is the act of identifying a person with Christianity by either sprinkling with water or immersion in water. It is typically done publicly and demonstrates that person’s identity with Jesus, in His death, burial and resurrection.

Baptism, in the Old Testament, is a cleansing or washing for purification. In the New Testament it becomes significantly linked to the mission given to followers of Jesus and is an outward sign of the people of God. In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus commands His followers to make disciples of all nations and peoples and to mark them with water baptism. In Acts 2, the Apostle Peter instructs those who respond to become followers of Jesus to “repent and be baptized” (v. 38). At the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry, all who turn to Jesus in faith are to be marked out with the sign of baptism. It is something that everyone who places their faith in Jesus Christ must do in response to His command.

baptism in the early church

When the Apostle Paul tells his God story, his testimony, he talks about the immediate opportunity he had to be baptized after believing in Jesus. Ananias, a follower of Jesus, went to Paul, a new follower of Jesus, and confirmed all that God was doing in his life and then said to him:

“What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.” (Acts 22:16)

In another story in the Bible, Philip, a faithful follower of Jesus, was talking to a man he had just met, who was searching for God but couldn’t find all the answers. God used Philip to share the story of Jesus, the Gospel, with this man and before they went their separate ways, the new believer in Jesus said to Philip:

“Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?” (Acts 8:36)

The Bible tells us that the man ordered his caravan to stop and he was immediately baptized.

It is evident in the New Testament that the early church responded to this ordinance, this command from Jesus, by regularly baptizing those who professed Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

Baptisms at Big House

At Big House we believe in public believer’s baptism. If you have placed your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Savior it is important to follow that response with baptism and publicly identify yourself with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The act of baptism is an emblem of burial and cleansing, signifying your death to the old life of unbelief, and purification from the pollution of sin in your new life of following Jesus.

If you have placed your faith in Jesus for salvation and committed your life to following Jesus as your Lord then you are ready to publicly display and declare this in the waters of baptism.
