SPOKEN WORD INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions for Big House Church’s writing invitational and contest.
Writing a spoken word about "Jesus Brings Peace" is a beautiful way to express the transformative power of faith and the calming influence of Jesus in our lives. Here's a guide to help you craft a poignant and impactful spoken word piece for BHC’s Christmas Eve service. It should be less than one minute. The winning entry will be featured in our Christmas Eve service and read by a person we have already chosen.
1. Reflect on Personal Experiences
Start by reflecting on your experiences of finding peace in your relationship with Jesus. Consider moments of solace, healing, or tranquility you've encountered through your faith. These personal reflections will add authenticity and depth to your spoken word.
2. Define the Essence of Peace
Explore what "peace" means to you in the context of your faith. Is it a sense of calm amid life's storms, a reassurance in times of uncertainty, or a profound internal harmony? Define the essence of peace you want to convey in your writing.
3. Explore Biblical Imagery
Draw inspiration from biblical passages that depict Jesus as the Prince of Peace. Incorporate imagery and metaphors from the Bible that resonate with you. Consider exploring scenes of Jesus calming the storm, offering peace to troubled hearts, or inviting individuals to rest in Him.
4. Craft Vivid Imagery
Use descriptive language to craft vivid imagery that captures the emotions associated with peace. Engage the senses by incorporating sights, sounds, and feelings that convey the serenity and tranquility found in Jesus.
5. Play with Rhythm and Sound
Spoken words are inherently rhythmic, so play with the cadence and sound of your words. Experiment with repetition, alliteration, and varied pacing to enhance the poetic flow. Consider how the rhythm of your words can mimic the ebb and flow of peace. Read it aloud often.
6. Express the Contrast Before and After
Highlight the contrast between life without Jesus and the transformative impact of encountering Him. Express the chaos or turmoil before finding peace in Jesus, emphasizing the powerful shift that occurs through faith.
7. Create a Strong Conclusion
Conclude your spoken word with a powerful and uplifting message about the enduring peace found in Jesus. Leave your audience with hope and the invitation to seek the same peace in their lives.
8. Practice and Refine
We have selected a reader for the Christmas Eve service. But you should practice delivering your spoken word out loud with emotion and conviction. Pay attention to the rhythm, pacing, and emphasis on certain words. Refine your piece until it reflects the sincerity and impact you intend to convey.
Remember, your spoken word is a personal expression of faith, and there's no right or wrong way to approach it. Let your heart guide your words, and allow the transformative message of Jesus to bring peace to shine through your poetic expression.
